8 Bits: Eight most memorable death scenes in gaming

Right. I'm not going to write anything interesting here in risk of getting someone angry over spoiling someone's death. Good. Let's continue then.

8 Bits: Eight Sequels that never could live up to the Originals

Every time a game gets a 10/10 at popular review sites you know it's time for a sequel soon enough, most often that sequel won't get the same score, whether it's because the game actually is worse than the original or if it's because everyone is looking at the original with those rose-tinted glasses, there's no denying that it's a constant phenomenon in the video game world. So let's take a look at eight sequels that never could live up to the originals.

Gamerscore Race 2010 (It's Over!)

Jimmy: As the year quickly moves to its end, so does the 2010 Gamerscore Race. With many ups and downs (consoles breaking down and memory cards disappearing) and a certanly close match indeed, we now have a winner... Me!

But not to worry...Gamescore Race 2011 begins in 49 days, so expect another long, adrenalin flowing race to glory and Gamerscore soon.

GAMEX 2010: Day Four

Day four, short day but I have a feeling something fun will come out of it... Muhahahahaha...

Saturday, November 6, 2010

GAMEX 2010: DKC Returns (Tobbii)

Ask me what the most popular game at GAMEX was... It was Donkey Kong Country Returns for the Wii. This was more crowded than Call of Duty: Black Ops, Dance Central and Killzone 3 which were all very time consuming to get in on. But hell, I wanted to know what all the fuss was about and I really like my old SNES games with Donkey Kong so I should love this right? Right? Read on.

GAMEX 2010: Day Three

Day 3 is coming up, but just so you folks new everything from Day 2 has not yet been done uploading, hence why some Day 2 stuff might appear later today. I suggest following the Achievement Unlock twitter to find out just when they arrive. Today is the longest day for us GAMEX so hopefully we'll get a lot of things done.

GAMEX 2010: Games for Nintendo (Tobbii + Jimmy)

Tobbii and Jimmy check out some games for Nintendo's consoles at GAMEX 2010 Day 2.

GAMEX 2010: Day Two

So I'm writing this from a car. That's right, GAMEX opened about for 85 minutes ago and Jimmy is there already with me on my way. My main games for today? Michael Jackson: The Experience, Dance Central, Kirby's Epic Yarn and confirming Jimmy's thoughts on Blood Stone.

GAMEX 2010: 007 Blood Stone (Jimmy)

So, finally the day has come...Gamex 2010 opening day.

As I come in to the main-hall and saw all this booths, i felt like a child on christmas eve. Where do I go? What should i check out first? I figured that before I got lost in the many game booths, i would check out Gamestops signup booth and get a giftcard for 25 Kronor (3,8 $ for you americans).

With that out of the way, i strolled around a bit and found my first game...007 Blood Stone.

GAMEX 2010: Day One

It has started! Jimmy is attending with me arriving tomorrow and Anna on Saturday. Expect a lot of coverage this weekend!

Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia Review

In time for Halloween, I’ve taken the time to play through Order of Ecclesia. I would have done it sometime eventually, but I’m glad I got to it. Being the third in the DS Castlevania series, those of you who have played either Dawn of Sorrow or Portrait of Ruin will be familiar with the gameplay style of OoE.

Review: Sid Meier's Civilization V

I love turn based strategy, whether it’s Heroes of Might Magic, Risk or of course Sid Meier’s Civilization. The endless hours I’ve spent on the different games in the franchise are some I’ll never regret, so naturally I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the fifth installment. Now it’s finally here, so how does it hold up to the classics? Has the “Father of PC Gaming” done it again? Read on to find out!

Review: No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle

Just a couple of weeks ago, I had no experience with No More Heroes whatsoever. Having looked at some videos, I thought it looked like a decent way to entertain myself, and so I decided to get it (also because it was cheap …).

List: The Ten Worst Things that happened to Resident Evil

Resident Evil has had its ups and downs throughout it's 14 year long history, but for the most part it's been considered one of the best franchises in gaming, and especially in horror-gaming for that matter. But if one were to truly analyse, with full bias of course, the franchise and find the worst things that for some reason made it into the games or its spin-offs then we'd find some really stupid things. Ladies and gentlemen, read on after the jump to find the Ten Worst Things that ever happened to Resident Evil.

Deaths in the Family

So today my Xbox 360 died, and Jonis's PS3 seems to have perished as well. Away goes hours upon hours of good memories. With this news you'll probably understand that some of the gaming that was meant to be held now will be harder for us, but for some good news to be told I have for the moment borrowed my brothers Xbox in order to finish what I was currently playing.

Farewell my dear Xbox 360, you brought me joy almost every day.

Video Review: Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days

Our first Video Review!

It's been three years since Kane & Lynch: Dead Men was released onto store shelves. The game was met with mixed reviews giving quite a backslash to bad A.I., undependable cover mechanic, lack of precise aiming and the uneven difficulty. In spite of that the game has been given the sequel treatment with Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days.

Review: RISK Factions

I'll be honest, I'm not a huge boardgame fanatic. I love boardgaming, but I rarely ever take a chance to play any real boardgames outside of the usual round of Monopoly or Chess. Before I played this game I had only tried RISK once, and my thoughts on that was "so-so", so it might seem strange that I took my time to get a hold of the beefed up version on Xbox Live Arcade based on the 2008 ruleset to increase the speed of the game. My final verdict? Well, read on to find out.

Gamerscore Race 2010 (Day 2010) + UPDATE!

Tobbii's comments:
So Jimmy is leaving Kalmar and our fun little gaming session ends, but we got some proper scores, and good new outfits for our avatars, while we were at it! Not much to say, we both got circa. 250G each this last day, it was fun.
Oh well, with that out of the way let's hit the update. We now have a Gamers Lounge in which you'll find all of our Gametags, PSN names and Wii/DS friend codes. Not much there right now, but it's getting there!

Gamerscore Race 2010 (Day 201)

Tobbii's comments:
With Jimmy back down in Kalmar for a week gaming has been a daily routine again, altough I guess it kind of was earlier as well since I've spent the latest week replaying Resident Evil 5 with every person I know (and still do) in order to get that last achievement (Weapon Collector). But at the same time I'm disapointed in my minimal increase of 470G in 31 days, oh well. For those who have followed me lately they should know that I've bought every bit of RE5 things there are, all expansions packs and the stupidly priced Versus Mode. So I have some to get there as well.

Jimmy comments:
Not much to say, I'm very happy with my monthly income of gamerscore.

Review: Final Fantasy XI Online: Ultimate Collection

Eight years ago Final Fantasy XI: Online hit the Playstation 2 in Japan, today it's also available on X-Box 360 and PC as the worlds first cross-platform compatible Multiplayer SBA*. It has spawned four retail expansions and four a little smaller add-ons as downloadable content with two more coming before the year ends. Final Fantasy XI Online: Ultimate Collection contains the aforementioned expansions and the first three add-ons. I sat down and leapt into the largest world ever created in Final Fantasy history, and what did I experience?

The 5 Best/Worst Sonic the Hedgehog Games

Sonic the Hedgehog has always been one of my favourite video game series seeing as I grew up with it on the SEGA Mega Drive along with its TV-shows and today on June 23'rd he turns 19. I still remember June 23'rd 2001, the release of Sonic Adventure 2. I still have my Japanese limited anniversary collectors edition complete with a golden coin and everything. Too bad the game-disc is scratched so that whenever I play the final stage it crashed when I begin playing as Dr. Robotnik. But not that it matters too much as my Dreamcast broke down some years ago as well. But enough talking about my memories of things breaking, let's talk about the five best and worst Sonic games of all time, in the order of their release, also remember that this is MY list, I bet yours is different but that doesn't make it wrong.

GoldenEye Issue

So it seems GoldenEye is coming to Nintendo DS as well and not just Wii, well since this information didn't arrive until after E3 I'm going keep the awards as they are. Just thought you'd want to know.

Gamerscore Race 2010 (Day 170)

Tobbii's Comments:
It's been quite some time hasn't it? 63 days since I even updated Twitter regarding the race, but the numbers have certainly gone up since then. Been playing a lot of Resonance of Fate, Split/Second, Alan Wake, Splinter Cell: Conviction and unfortunately some Star Wars: The Force Unleashed as well. So I've had quite a few games to collect score in, and I believe I have collection a decent amount of score as well.

Jimmy's Comments:
Well since i moved to Stockholm it have been a lot to do and not so much time to race, but i am happy to say that i have now re-gained my lost score, and will try to work double-time to make up for lost time.

Achievement Unlock's E3 2010 Awards

E3 2010 is over, and man was it a blast! I have a total of 51 titles that I thought looked interesting and/or amazing at this years expo and I'm sure my co writers also have a bunch of titles they're looking forward to. But enough talking, let's get to the awards. Watching every little bit of E3 was me, Jimmy, Jonis and Marty. We'll all be giving out awards after the jump.

5 Games That Should Be on XBLA

I have been thinking a bit..or rather alot on what games from past times that would be awesome if they came to XBLA.

E3 is finally over.

It's done. It was fun, probably the best E3 ever, so as we say goodbye the final poll goes up. Who do you think won E3? Well go ahead, vote!

E3 2010 Awards coming soon....

Also, I'm bumping Jimmy's Top 5 list back up for those that missed it during E3.

End of the Week: It's time for E3

It's the end of the week and tomorrow comes E3 2010, can't wait to see what awesome things get announced then! Also, we had our first article written by Jimmy at the site, I think we can expect more stuff from him as time moves on. Regarding upcoming reviews, I'm still working to finish Resonance of Fate, but I can spoil right here that the game will get a very high score in the end, because it's truly amazing. I'm also planning on picking up Dragon Quest IX next month and review that. And did I hear someone claim Blur is better than Split/Second...?

Speaking of Split/Second, (almost) a week later I can reconfirm that it is indeed an amazing game, read my review for more details, and the go out and buy the game. You owe it to yourself if you're a racing fan. Also, once again, don't forget that you can always follow me and Jimmy on Twitter. (@SirTobbii and @Nethalin666)

Review: Split/Second: Velocity

One of the surprises at last years E3 was Disney Interactive's Split/Second Velocity developed by Black Rock Studios. A highly cinematic and Michael Bay-esque racer in which you can alter the entire course by blowing stuff up. The concept was there, and it does sound like something truly unique and fun, but does it go all the way?

Review: Alan Wake

It’s been five years since Remedy announced Alan Wake for the Xbox 360 at E3 2005 and I was as hyped then as I was the last month of waiting. But five years is a long time, and if you’ve been waiting you probably want to make sure the wait is worth it. Well I was there on day one and played it through to the end, I’m here to tell you if Alan Wake is worth the wait.

Review: Condemned Criminal Origins

The first horror game of this generation was made by Monolith Productions, called FEAR: First Encounter Assault Recon. However, not long after the release of FEAR came Condemned, also by Monolith. A new gritty take on the often underused psychological horror genre. Did it turn out well?

End of the Week: Horror Time

Alan Wake is here, I've played it and finished it. I'm about to play it again, because I love it. However, where would Alan Wake be today without other kinds of horror games that led up to it and it's now well known "Psychological Action Thriller" title? Well, it probably wouldn't be here.

Alone in the Dark, Resident Evil, Silent Hill and so many other titles are part of what made the genre so big to begin with. Alone in the Dark had its atmospheric horror, Resident Evil its B-Movie scares and Silent Hill its complex psychological nightmares. Because of this, I'll devote the coming week to horror videogames, I've already started yesterday with Alone in the Dark and I'll continue every day until Saturday.

Also, the Silent Hill: Shattered Memories re-review is official, it's going to be reviewed using the now official AU system to make it fit with the other reviews in the library. Oh well, that's all for this week though, in some hours today's review should be up, can you guess what game it'll be?

Due to coming things at school I won't be able to post a review every day, I will however make sure to have a lot of reviews coming through May instead.

Retro Review: Alone in the Dark

The name "Survival Horror" was coined by Resident Evil in 1996, since then it's been tossed around on various occasions and renamed things like "Psychological Horror" or "Survival Action" when the developers felt the need to change it up a bit. The latest change would probably be "A Psychological Action Thriller" which is what Remedy is calling Alan Wake for the X-Box 360. However, in 1992 was the very first definition of the then small horror game genre named with Alone in the Dark, dubbed a "Ambient Survival Horror".

Alan Wake unboxing + Update

Me unboxing Alan Wake!

Alan Wake review is coming once I'm done, so expect that some time next week or so. In other news, I've planned to re-do my Silent Hill SM review using the new Review System, and with me on that idea is Anna (aka. Puff) and possibly Marty, so we might get a triple review! With that said I must get back to Alan Wake now, follow my twitter for my AW thoughts while playing!

Sunday, May 2, 2010

End of the Week: Import-Mania!

Wow, has this been a big week for AU. Jimmy left for Stockholm, Jonis dropped out of the GS race, we got a brand new writer and we have three reviews out of which two are import games!
And if that hasn't been enough import for you I'll tell you that pretty soon me and Marty are going to have a very special retrospective series using only imported games. The games in question will be revealed later on, but I'm sure it'll turn out great.

Personally, I finally got my hands on Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days and will probably spend most of my time playing that for now, been wanting that game for months. The Final Fantasy XIII review is on it's way once again, in text format using only me and Jonis. So that will probably arrive sometime during May. And if you havn't noticed it yet, I've started making these End-of-the-Week posts now, that's also good.

Also, in two weeks comes Alan Wake, expect something big concerning that.

Import Review: Tales of VS.

With a bunch of RPGs released throughout a 15-year long period, Namco decided to follow suit with Nintendo and Square Enix and create a fighter that would be comprised of Tales characters.

Import Review: Clock Tower First Fear

Clock Tower is one of the big horror game series mostly famous for their release on the original PlayStation. Unknown to many the first Clock Tower game was released in 1995 to the SNES console. Did it live up to it's follow-ups on the PlayStation console? Let's find out.

Review: Splinter Cell Conviction

It’s been four years since Splinter Cell: Double Agent was released across every platform known to man, and while it didn’t live up to our expectations it didn’t take long until Ubisoft announced Splinter Cell: Conviction, the fifth chapter in the story of Sam Fisher. After years of delays and completely rebuilding the game from scratch it’s finally here. So how does it hold up to the kings of the stealth genre? Let’s find out.

Puff: Hello and info!

Hello! Puff here speaking.
I make this update without permission from my boyfriend Sir Tobbii; but I'm sure he'll notice in no time. While looking through Achievement Unlock I realized that I've done little to add to the gaming spirit.

So I'll do my share this weekend. I'll sit down and play through the game Clock Tower for the Super Famicom, I'll then put up a Retro-Review of the game here.

So, get ready for some classic horror.

(Cleaned up some things. //Tobbii)

Major Updates! (UPDATED!)

Alright, important matters first.

Jimmy Lindmark, one of the founders of Achievement Unlock is leaving tomorrow for Stockholm, naturally this means that while he still will be a part of the website he probably won't be making any more videos with anyone down here in Kalmar for the time being. Unfortunatly, this means no three-way Final Fantasy XIII review that I was looking forward to shooting. So allow me to sum it up shortly; I think the game is worthless, so does Jimmy. However, Jonis happens to love it so much he named it "The Best Final Fantasy Ever". So make with that what you want.

But on to more positive news! We've got a brand new writer here at AU! I'd like to welcome Marty Karlsson to the team, let's hope he won't have to move any time soon. Next important bit is about the 2010 GamerScore Race. Jonis has officially dropped out as he sold his X-Box 360 last week. But Jimmy and me are still going at it and of course I will win in the end ... or not, we'll see.

The next upcoming review by me is one of these three; Resonance of Fate, Splinter Cell: Conviction and Alan Wake. All games that I've been looking forward to a whole lot, so let's hope they lived up to their potential. We also have a little bit different design on the site now, so enjoy that as well not to mention that soon we'll have a profile section for all the writers at AU.

Now, I might not be write that much on twitter the upcoming days, as my wait for Alan Wake also means that I'm staying away from internet to avoid spoilers as best I can.

The Profile sections is up, now to get everyone to write something! Also, the twitter/gamertags are now available under Contact.

Gamerscore Race (Day 101)

Tobbii''s Notes:
It's too bad Jimmy lost his Memory Unit and +5000G of progress on the race, but at least he's getting back into the race and I'm sure he'll pick up quick enough. Also, we will both be more precise with going online on our profiles from now and then to secure our score. Any way, make sure to read my Lost Planet 2 Multiplayer Beta impressions below!

[Preview] Lost Planet 2: Multiplayer

I love Capcom, and who wouldn't? They brought us classics like Resident Evil, Street Fighter, Mega Man and Bionic Commando. Their name is synonymous with quality, or at least they most often is. Lost Planet 2, the sequel to 2006's popular X-box 360 game is unfortunately a very mixed bag, at least in its current state. But what does that actually mean? Hit the jump to find out!

Gamerscore Race (Day 81)

Tobbii's Notes:
Told you folks that I'd be updating my LIVE profile soon! ... Okay, so it took more than a month, but I still did it. FF13 is still not finished, and apparently Jonis won't be joining us for the review, might just be a misunderstanding though, I'll look into it.

Post-FFXIII Marathon Updates

Well then, the live marathon went quite nice! Now, we haven't finished the game yet actually, so you'll have to wait a little bit longer for a review. It'll be something special though, we're three people on it and we don't share opinions on it that much. :P

Untill then, visit the Ustream account to watch some of the footage from the marathon, most of it is in Swedish though.

[Review] Silent Hill: Shattered Memories

Reviewed by Torbjörn "Tobbii" Karlsson
Silent Hill is one of my most beloved franchises, I've played every game in the main series except for Origins, I even took my time to play Silent Hill: Orphan part 1 and 2 on my old cellphone. Yesterday a new game in the franchise was released here in Europe, a complete re-imagining of the original Silent Hill entitled Shattered Memories, for the Wii, PS2 and PSP. First of all, no, I am not going to do any parallels to the original Silent Hill in this review as it would be unfair to the game itself. It's not a remake or a retelling, it's a brand new game. The only thing they have in common are names and they both begin with a car crashing in the town of Silent Hill.

Final Fantasy XIII Marathon

On the 9th of March Final Fantasy XIII hits Europe and America. Seeing as out nation gets the game quite early on that day we've decided to host a live-stream on Ustream on the 9th March of us playing the brand new Final Fantasy XIII!
And you know what the best part is? We'll play till we're finished with the game! Assuming it doesn't take more than 120 hours, then we might call it quit.
So join us here on the 9th of March, we'll have an open chat and everything!

10 Unannounced Sequels ... that I want Announced

Pretty much every day I think of how awesome a sequel to some games would be, some of them are likely to arrive at some point, but some seem to never get their chance to see the light of day. Because of this I've decided to make a little list of ten games I personally think should have a sequel as soon as possible. Some are quite obvious, while others may surprise you. Naturally I'll write just why I think a sequel would be a good idea, so let's get going!

Gamerscore Race (Day 45)

Tobbii's notes: Okay, so I still haven't updated the LIVE profile, sorry. This weekend was alot of fun, we played some MW2, celebrated Anna's birthday and had a really good time. Anyway, on to the achievements. We got some on Tetris Evolution, Scene It? Bright Lights, Big Screen and Left 4 Dead 2. Also, I got some on Fallout 3 and Dante's Inferno. Also, I've heard that Jimmy's got his hands on Guitar Hero: Van Halen and Bioshock 2. Maybe I should ask him to come over...

Gamerscore Race (Day 50)

Tobbii's notes: Got a whole bunch of Gamerscore on that horrid Hannah Montana game today, I know it's kind of ugly to play those kind of games just for achievements, but hey, I had nothing better to do, only took me 3 hours. Also, me and Jimmy got some G on Scene It: Box Office Bust today, and I got my first Tetris: Evolution achievement for that matter. Haven't heard from Jonis these last days, but he hasn't informed me on any new score since his 1100G's last Friday.

P.S: I hope to update my LIVE profile someday this weekend, but we'll see.
